PATIENT INFORMATION

Surgery of nasal clams

Surgical reduction of nasal turbinates (conchotomy ) is performed on patients with unilateral or bilateral nasal congestion due to lack of space. The procedure is performed as a day surgery and is performed under general anesthesia. On average, the operation takes about 30 minutes. You will then be wheeled to the observation room where you will
stay for about 1 hour before you can go home.
At the end of the entire procedure, nasal tampons are inserted and removed the following day.

BEFORE SURGERY
Read the appendix with information about day surgery. Contact us by phone if you have any questions.

AFTER SURGERY
Some oozing of blood and clear fluid from the nose and back of the throat, moderate pain and slight swelling of the nose are common. Some headaches and pressure above/around the eyes and in the middle of the face are common in the first few days after surgery. Lying with your head elevated may help.

During the first 1-2 days after the operation, you may experience a slight rise in temperature up to 38.5°. If your fever continues to rise or does not go down after 2-3 days, please contact us.

You will be scheduled for a check-up appointment the first day after the operation, where the nasal tampons will be placed. Further follow-up is agreed with the doctor.

You will be given a prescription for painkillers after the operation. A power of attorney will be arranged for relatives on the day of the operation, so that the collector can collect for you.

NOSE RINSE
You should start nasal rinsing the evening after removing nasal tampons and continue to do so for the first 4-6 weeks after the procedure. Rinse your nose 3-5 times a day. This is to prevent the formation of crusts. The use of nasal oil (Rhinoil) between nasal rinses is also recommended. It may take some time before you manage to rinse completely through the nose at first, and it is important to continue rinsing. Contact us by phone if you have any questions.

ACTIVITY AND SICK LEAVE
Everyone must be supervised by an adult for the first 24 hours after surgery. In the beginning, it is important to avoid bending to the floor, heavy lifting and hot showers.
You will be on sick leave for 1-2 weeks.
You should refrain from exercise for 3-4 weeks. If you have a physically demanding job, your doctor may consider the need for extended sick leave. You must not blow your nose hard for 2-3 weeks.

COMPLICATIONS
Any surgery carries a risk of bleeding, infection and a minimal risk of allergic reaction to anesthetics.

In the event of bleeding from the nose (rare), you can cool down with ice in a plastic bag or place an ice cube on your tongue. If you experience heavy bleeding, significant swelling or fever, please contact us or your local ear, nose and throat department.
