PATIENT INFORMATION

Surgery of the tonsils

Removal of tonsils (tonsillectomy) is done due to frequent sore throats, chronic complaints of discomfort, bad odor and blockages, or large tonsils that cause breathing problems during sleep. A mouth guard (an instrument that presses down on the tongue) is used to keep the mouth open while the tonsils are removed. The tonsils are removed from the tonsil beds. There are several surgical techniques for removing tonsils. The surgeon chooses the technique that is best for your
case.
On average, the operation takes 30 minutes. After the operation, the patient is observed for about 1.5 hours. The patient will be examined by the surgeon before going home. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

BEFORE SURGERY
Read the appendix with information about day surgery. Contact us by phone if you have any questions.

AFTER SURGERY
Slightly pink/bloodstained saliva is common in the first 24 hours after surgery, but if the saliva becomes really colorful or if you suspect bleeding, you must seek medical attention.

When the tonsils are removed, there is a wound surface on each side of the throat. These wounds are painful and often radiate into the ears. Many people have a swollen throat and pain in the tongue due to the procedure. The duration of the pain varies (from a few days to several weeks). A white
coating forms where the tonsils were, which will disappear.

You may have a fever of 38-39 degrees in the first few days after surgery. In case of persistent fever or fever up to 40 degrees, you must contact a doctor.

The risk of bleeding is greatest during the first 24 hours and around day 7-8 after the operation. It is important to avoid any activity that can increase blood pressure for the first 10-12 days.

You will be given a prescription for painkillers after the operation. A power of attorney will be arranged for relatives on the day of the operation, so that the collector can collect for you.

There is normally no need for a check-up appointment, but it is important to contact us in the event of bleeding or persistent fever.

FOOD
For the first 3-4 days, avoid consuming hot food and drink. Lukewarm or cold, soft food is usually best. It is important to get enough to drink. Ice cream is decongestant and has a good cooling effect.

ACTIVITY AND SICKNESS
Everyone must be supervised by an adult for the first 24 hours.

You get 2 weeks sick leave. Written electronically on the day of surgery.
You should refrain from exercise for 2 weeks.

Any surgery carries a risk of bleeding, infection and a minimal risk of allergic reaction to anesthetics.

If you experience heavy bleeding, significant swelling or fever, please contact us or your local ear, nose and throat department.
