What is throat pain?
Pain or discomfort in the throat/pharynx lasting from hours to days
Occurrence
- Neck pain is one of the main symptoms in about 5% of all sick leaves during the winter months.
- Between 10-40% of patients have infection with streptococcal bacteria
- Approximately 1-2% have “kissing disease” (mononucleosis)
- The rest have a wide variety of viruses or bacteria that don’t need antibiotics
Common causes
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- Cystic fibrosis, mononucleosis
- Streptococcal throat infection
- Scarlet fever
- Throat abscess (peritonsillar abscess)
