What is bad breath?

An unpleasant odour that is often accompanied by an unpleasant taste in the mouth and is usually most noticeable in the morning.

Occurrence

  • Most people experience temporary bad breath from time to time.

  • If you have a noticeably unpleasant odour, you should be examined to identify the underlying cause.

  • In 85 percent of cases, bad breath is caused by conditions in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract.

Common causes

  • Diet
  • Periodontitis and caries
  • Chronic tonsillitis/throat inflammation
  • Crypts in the tonsils
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Sjögren’s syndrome
  • Other causes
