Gingivitis

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums (gingiva).

Signs of gingivitis.

A healthy gum is bright red in color and lies tightly against the teeth. Inflamed gums turn a darker red color, become swollen and may feel tender to the touch. Furthermore, you may find that your gums bleed when cleaning and that they lie less tightly against your teeth.

How does gingivitis occur?

Inadequate cleaning can lead to the development of gingivitis over time. This is caused by bacteria and a soft coating (plaque) that remains in the gum line. If you form a lot of tartar, this can also contribute to the development of gingivitis. It is particularly common for gingivitis to occur between the teeth and elsewhere where it is difficult to keep clean.

How can gingivitis be prevented?

Gingivitis is a reversible condition and thorough cleaning can make the gums healthy again:

  • The toothbrush should be used carefully but gently on the gum line to avoid damaging and retracting the gums. A worn toothbrush is not very effective. Therefore, change the brush approx. every 3. month or when the bristles burst.
  • A lot of plaque and bacteria accumulate between the teeth. Therefore, clean between your teeth at least once a day. If your teeth are crowded, dental floss can be an effective aid. A floss holder can be used to gain access between the molars. For larger gaps between teeth, interdental brushes are best suited. These come in different sizes and are used in a similar way to toothpicks.
  • Routine dental cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist is also necessary to ensure healthy gum conditions. How often this should be done is individual and depends on how quickly plaque and tartar form.
