Cleaning your teeth

To avoid problems with your teeth and gums, it’s important to have a sensible diet and good hygiene. Here is some advice on how to take care of your teeth in the best possible way:

  • Have regular meals and avoid snacking between meals. If you must eat something between meals, take fruit or vegetables instead of something sweet.
  • Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks. For example, soft drinks can be replaced with water as a thirst quencher.
  • Wait an hour before brushing your teeth after consuming acidic foods and drinks. Finish your meal with alkaline foods such as cheese or milk.

  • Brush your teeth thoroughly with toothpaste morning and evening. A worn toothbrush is not very effective. Therefore, replace the brush every 3 months or when the bristles crack.

  • Clean between your teeth at least once a day. If your teeth are crowded, flossing will be an effective aid. To reach between the molars, you can use a floss holder.

  • For larger gaps between teeth, interdental brushes are best suited. These come in different sizes and are used in a similar way to toothpicks. Spacer brushes are particularly suitable for keeping clean if you have a bridge. Your dentist or dental hygienist can help you choose the correct size brush.

  • The tongue is also a place where a lot of bacteria accumulate.
These can cause bad breath. A tongue brush will effectively remove bacteria from the back of the tongue and thus contribute to healthier conditions in the oral cavity.

  • Extra use of fluoride will help to strengthen your teeth. This is available in the form of tablets and rinses and can be used daily.

Even if your diet and hygiene are good, you should have your mouth checked by a dentist or dental hygienist every year. This will reveal any cavities, gum disease or infections in the oral cavity that need to be treated.
